The Bridal Gold Set: What It Includes and How to Choose

The bridal set is the largest gold purchase made at once, worn on a night that is photographed endlessly. These are the things worth settling before you go to the shop.

A full set or a half set?

A full set in Gulf shops: a necklace (or mariya) with earrings, a bracelet and a ring in the same design. A “nus taqm” (half set) means the necklace with earrings only, sometimes with a ring added.

A half set is lighter, costs less, and gets worn more after the wedding. A full set gives a complete look on the wedding night. There is no single right answer — it depends on what you will wear later.

The neckline decides the necklace

A round or square neckline can carry a wide mariya that fills the space. A V-neck suits a necklace that falls to a single centre point — a medallion or a tassel.

A dress closed up to the neck takes a longer necklace that sits over the fabric, or a khanaq (choker) close against the neck. Try the necklace against a photo of the dress if the dress is not with you.

Weight: a big look or a lot of grams?

Visible size and weight are not the same thing. Openwork pieces give a broad presence at a lighter weight, so they can be worn for hours without tiring the neck and ears.

Pay particular attention to the earrings: the ears tire first. Ask for the weight of the earrings on their own, not just the weight of the whole set.

Tiers of the mariya

Many mariyas come with one, two or three tiers of beads or drops. Each tier adds both presence and weight, and brings the piece lower on the chest — so it needs a neckline wide enough for it.

Before you decide

See the piece worn, not just on display: on the neck its shape changes completely. Ask for the weight and karat of every piece in the set in writing.

Ask about the ring: can it be resized? And about the necklace clasp: does it have an extension chain? These small details are what cause trouble on the wedding night.

Quick questions

How many pieces are in a bridal set?

A full set is usually four pieces: a necklace, earrings, a bracelet and a ring. A “nus taqm” (half set) is a necklace and earrings, sometimes with a ring added.

What does nus taqm mean?

A necklace with earrings in the same design, without the bracelet — sometimes with a ring.
